Democracy is losing its appeal day by day in many countries because of its poor performance in
recent years. Nowadays it is failing to provide equal rights to citizens of the country. Moreover
in a democratic government system in many times the will of peoples are not reflected properly in
the decisions of government. In this article, I tried to find out the reasons, why democracy is
performing so poorly?

The word democracy itself means rule by the people. A democracy is a system where people can
change their rulers in a peaceful manner and the government is given the right to rule because the
people say it may. According to the former president of the USA Abraham Lincoln, democracy is the
Government of the people, by the people, for the people. The term democracy is derived from
the Greek dēmokratia, which was coined from dēmos (“people”) and Kratos (“rule”) in the middle
of the 5th century BCE to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states,
notably Athens. But democracy struggling in developing and poor countries, even in recent
times democracy is struggling in western countries like the USA. The whole world witnessed the
poor situation of Democracy in the USA during the regime of Donald Trump.

‘’Why Democracy Performing So Poorly?” is discussed below, Institutionalization Problem: Institutionalization means impersonal. A modern state will be an impersonal state which means every citizen of the state will be treated equally by the state. According to Francis Fukuyama failure of institutionalization is liable for performing democracy slowly. Modern liberal democracies combine 3 basic institutions: The state, Rule of law,
Democratic accountability.

Neo-Patrimonial State

Patrimonial states are regarded as a species of personal property and in
which there is no distinction between the public interest and the ruler’s private interest. Today in
this world there is no patrimonial state fully. But neo-patrimonial can coexist with democracy,
producing widespread patronage and clientelism in which politicians share state resources with
networks of political supporters.

In many democratic countries, the political leaders, officers, tend to be corrupt,
dishonest, and inefficient. They ask for the bribe. This results in a lack of trust in the citizens. This
affects the working of democracy in the country very badly.

Economic and Social Inequalities Among People: There is a lot of socioeconomic inequalities
amongst the people. Although all the citizens have the right to vote and fight elections only rich
people have a chance to win the election.

Casteism and Communalism: During elections, a large number of voters give weight to the caste
and religion of the candidate. Political parties also keep in mind the caste or religion of a person
while distributing tickets for the election. Representatives elected on the basis of caste or religion
work for the welfare of the people belonging only to their caste or religion.

Low Literacy Rate

We know educated peoples are more aware of politics. But in most of the
developing countries has a low literacy rate. As a result, a huge number of the population of these
countries are not showing interest in politics. On the other hand, democracy can not run properly
without the participation of a huge population of a country. So democracy performing
poorly in these developing countries.

Though the democratic government system is the best government system till now, it is struggling in
recent years whole over the world. Due to the Institutionalization Problem, neo-patrimonial state,
casteism, lack of awareness of people it is performing so poorly.
